At last! A really good clear book explaining fuel cells!

At last, there is a really good book that carefully and clearly explains fuel cells and the whole fuel cell power system. This book is written by the ideal combination - a teacher who has also worked with fuel cells, and an engineer from the fuel cell industry.

A perfect book for engineers and scientists coming into the field, it is also what is needed by students at University on a wide range of engineering and science courses. Much of the book will also be understandable by advanced high school or A level chemistry students. It assumes very little prior knowledge about fuel cells, and no prior knowledge about fuel cell chemistry.

We strongly recommend it to you!

Features of the book include:

  • An overview of fuel cell technology, explaining the operation and fundamental thermodynamics of fuel cells with a clear and well illustrated account of cell construction.
  • Detailed accounts of the problems faced by designers of all major fuel cell types currently in commercial development including water management, cooling, air supply, construction methods, operating pressure and reactant composition.
  • Up to date coverage of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) cells and all other fuel cell types.
  • A whole chapter devoted to direct methanol fuel cells.
  • A long and thorough chapter on fuel processing and reforming, and all aspects of storing hydrogen.
  • Description of the main devices for moving, compressing and expanding the gases in fuel cell systems, including relevant formulas.
  • Coverage of the complete fuel cell power system including compressors, turbines, fuel processors, hydrogen storage devices, inverters and motors.
  • Clear treatment of the electrical and electronic sub-systems, including regulators, grid inter-ties, electric motors and hybrid fuel cell/battery systems.
  • Published in 2003, this book is now in its second edition, following the great success of the first edition.

Dr Gary Acres OBE, formerly research director of Johnson Matthey and one of the leading people in the world of fuel cells, has written a forward commending the book. He includes these words:-

"This book offers those new to fuel cells a comprehensive, clear exposition and review to further their understanding, and also provides those familiar with the subject a convenient reference."
